The 2009 Amputee Games, creating sporting opportunites for the newly disabled.

The 2009 Amputee Games is back at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, the home of disability sport, for another power packed two-days of sporting opportunity. Participants will be invited to ‘have-a-go’ at 13 Paralympic sports under the guidance of the sporting governing bodies.

The inaugural event saw 81 amputees take part in archery, badminton, basketball, bowls, fencing, athletics, shooting, swimming, tennis, power-lifting, table-tennis, hand cycling and sitting volleyball. From this we know that one participant has gone on to join the National Sitting Volleyball squad and a number of other participants have taken part in a wheelchair tennis coaching weekend, as well as taking part in sports at a local level. The Amputee Games is a great opportunity to be spotted by talent coaches from the British Paralympic Association as well as the individual sporting governing bodies. This truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity for new amputees to learn about the different sporting opportunities available to them, whether it be at a local level for the fun of participation or at a national level as a professional athlete.

As well as taking part in the 13 Paralympic sports being demonstrated at the event participants can also talk to representatives from these and other sporting organisations throughout the games at the sports information centre.

The Games takes place on Saturday 22^nd and Sunday 23^rd August at Stoke Mandeville Stadium.
